We're based in Rumianek, but our teachers come from all over the world — and we've been teaching languages the un-school way for over a decade!
How it all started
Our adventure with uNick Academy began over a decade ago. Before that, it was just Nick running 'English with an Englishman'. His lessons were so popular I seriously considered cloning him. I was working in a corporation at the time. But fate stepped in — the company let me go, which in hindsight turned out to be the best thing that could have happened. So instead of cloning Nick, I joined the team.
At first we divided things up — he taught adults, I taught children. But I noticed one difference — when Nick taught, the children spoke English much more willingly than in my classes. Why? The answer is actually simple — because with me it was artificially forced. That's just how our brains work — they take the path of least resistance. If this lady speaks Polish, she'll understand what I say in Polish. That's when I realised why lessons with a foreigner are so much more effective. The brain sees a natural need to communicate in another language.
And that's how it started — since Nick couldn't be cloned, and my lessons weren't as effective (though the kids and I had a blast) — we decided our school would be different. You might even say unique… or rather uNick.
From every corner of the world
First Gui from Portugal joined us, then Camilla from Canada — they were wonderful and the students loved them. Then came the equally amazing Kimy from Ecuador, Mona and Hussain from Saudi Arabia, and many, many other fantastic people from every corner of the world.
Over the years we've received countless messages from students and their parents about how we've directly or indirectly impacted their lives. Not just by breaking the language barrier, but by opening their minds to the world. And I have to say, I'm incredibly proud of that.
